Laboratory Instruments: Laminar Air Flow Chamber

Image

A laminar flow cabinet is an enclosed workbench that is used to create a contaminant-free work environment by using HEPA filters to trap any particles that reach the cabinet. A laminar flow hood is used when dealing with contaminants that are not harmful to the health of the workers. Desktop laminar flow chambers, also known as laminar flow clean benches, are similar to biosafety cabinets in that they are machines that use a filtration mechanism to fully clean the ambient air. Laminar air flow is used to shield semiconductor wafers, sensitive materials, and even biological samples from contamination. A laminar flow unit is widely used in a variety of industries, including medical, scientific, pharmacy, and education, as well as electronics, optics, micromechanics, and the plastics industry, among others, because it performs processes that require a clean and sterile environment. A unidirectional vertical descending flow of air from the room passes through the HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Absorbing) filters and into the working chamber. The air is returned to the atmosphere from the working area in the following ways: partly through the perforation in the cabinet's bottom rear area, but mostly through the gap between the table's working surface and the protecting glass. UV light, a glass shield, an air intake fan, a safety panel, and windows are some of the essential components of a laminar flow chamber. Each component of a clean bench has a critical role to play in establishing and maintaining sterile conditions. The air is drawn through the filter pad, which absorbs the dust, before being filtered by the HEPA filter, which eliminates all airborne pollutants and preserves sterile conditions.
